My name is Charmay Hoang and I am a freshman at RCHS. Currently I am playing on the Girl's Varsity Basketball team, participating in Key Club, and recently I earned my black belt at Western Martial Arts Academy. I've been playing basketball since I was eight and I was in martial arts for 5 years now. I joined Video Productions because I realized I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grow up. So, I decided to try film to see if there's a career that I'd be interested in. So, far I haven't found that yet, but I hope after taking different electives I will find out what I want to do when I grow up. I do know that after I graduate I would like to go straight to a four-year college.

How do filmmakers develop and convey stories within the mise-en-scène? - - Describe the process of creating your one-shot and multi-shot films... How did you work as a group to develop what shots should be taken? How are you approaching the editing process? What have been some successes and hurdles in these first projects? How do you feel your views on film have changed now that you've had a taste of the work involved?

Filmmakers develop and convey stories within the mise-en-scene by controlling what they want to be shown in the frame in each scene. They decided what is shown by figuring out what they want the meaning of the scenes to have. The process of my one-shot story was fairly easy when we decided what we wanted to shoot. One person set up the camera to frame and filmed while three of us were playing basketball and one person was coming in to ask to play. The multi-shot film was the same except we decided to make the one person walk sadly to a different location where he is still seen, instead of off screen. We worked as a team to consider what shots should be taken by asking what shot each person wants because we all envisioned the film in different ways.So, we filmed a lot of shots from different angles. I am doing well on editing, I just need to put all the clips in the right order, trim, and add music and text. The success so far in the editing is I already have an idea of how I want the film to go. The hurdles in editing are trying to stay organized with so many clips, music, and text. My view changed about how I see film because I realized there is a lot of work in editing and filming so it looks perfect.

Consider the shots and camera movements we've defined, shot, and edited. Which is your favorite from those you captured for your commercial and why? Also, which is your least favorite shot/camera move and why? What has learning about all these shots/moves taught you about cinematography?

My favorite shot we took in our commercial "The Good Pencil" was the high-angle shot. It was a good shot we took where I was on the bottom stairs and the camera was at the top of the stairs looking down at me throwing pencils. My least favorite was the oblique shot because in our commercial it made no sense to have to shoot a shot where we had no "action" scenes. Learning about all these shots have taught me that cinematography is a difficult task because you have to make sure that you get everything the producers want in the mise-en-scène. Also, coming up with what shots relate and a good shots were difficult.

Reflect on the process of creating a TV Show Pilot: Provide the log line for your original screenplay and connect your costume designs and ad campaign to the story you created... why did you design what you designed based on the story? Tell, too, about the TV Show Pilot you filmed and edited with your group... what was it like to work with a script and what types of shot(s) do you feel brought the show to life most?

The script I created was called "The End" and the log line was "Belle, Adam and another are the last survivors of the apocalypse. Will they make it to the end?". I designed on the computer Belle's costume which was a yellow silk dress, complimented which silver heels, a silver crown, a silver necklace and silver earrings. In the end, our group decided to do another script which I called "The One That Got Away". It was about a guy who goes missing and his friends try to find who killed him. For the ad campaigns, I did a girl running with the thought bubble of her killing her friend. The types of shots that brought the script to life was the superimposition and reaction shots. The superimposition was one girl taking a nap dreaming about what happened. This caused the friends to find out what happened. The reaction shot showed what the characters said and did when they found their friend dead.

What are some of your biggest psychological barriers when it comes to making films? Share your ups and downs of filmmaking on your blog, and how you plan to continue to grow in the second half of the class.

One of my biggest psychological barriers when it comes to making films is caring too much about what is popular. This keeps me from being creative and coming up with new ideas. Another one of my biggest psychological barriers is not making enough narrative content. The story lines for my one shot, multi-shot story, and commercial video, were good, but when it came the to the TV Pilot and the Mid- Term Montage I had some struggles. It was hard for me to be creative and come up with good narratives. I plan to continue to grow next term by trying to not think about what is popular and what people like. So, I can be more creative and do what I envision.

Describe your experience shooting this project in the film studio with the added lighting elements. How do you feel the studio time affected your final product quality? Additionally, how did you approach the montage portion of your film. Describe what you chose to cut together and what effect you hope for it to have on your audience.

Using the lighting elements in the studio was hard. One, because we could only film in such a confined place and in one of our scenes the audience could see the legs of the light. It was also hard because we couldn't get the background light to fully go on the background so part of the scenes the audience sees a little blue and red. The limited studio time limited the quality of the film poorly because we had to rush the last couple scenes because we were running out of time. l approached the montage by cutting the scenes to the beat of the music and using superimposition. I chose to put together all of our scenes except the one where we were laughing. It went in the order of present, freshman year, present, sophomore year, present, junior year, and back to present where the character dies. I hope for the audience to feel pity for the girl because we showed bullying in the video which caused her to kill herself.

Soon, you'll be pitching an idea for a feature film in this class. What genre do you think you'll focus your creativity on? Why are you drawn to this genre? What do you find most interesting about this genre? What would you hope others would get from your work if you were to create films in this genre?

I think I will focus on creating a dramatic film. I am most drawn to these films because they are interesting.The most interesting thing about drama films are that I can relate to them like I understand what the characters are going through. I hop others will get from my work that you can push through what ever obstacles come your way and that everyone can relate or they have the similar problems.

Describe your most recent shoot recording a music video. Which song did you choose and what type of concept or mixture of concepts did you capture. Describe what you the final product looks like and how you'd define it in regard to "documentary," "low concept," &/or "high concept." What are you most proud of with this project?

In the most recent project, the music video, we chose the song "Just a Dream". The concept was this girl had a best friend and when she fell asleep, she had a dream that they were friends again, but when she woke up she realized that that was not the case.The final project looked nice and showed a low concept music video because it was telling a story rather than showing something symbolical. I am most proud of getting the shots to work in the same time and beat as the song because it was difficult. I'm also proud of cutting parts off the song like in the middle and making it sound like that is how the song was supposed to be.
