Theatre 1: Blogs - Fall 2017

I'm Zoë and I joined theater because I absolutely love designing and art. Drawing out costumes and creating characters and stories is the one thing that I enjoy most in life. Drawing and writing them out is the funnest part for me. I knew that if I took theater then I would be able to do more of what I love.

In my opinion, the playwright is the most important person when it comes to creating plays/shows/musicals. Only because without the playwright, what is the need of a cast and crew. The playwright must create something in order for the actors, designers, director, and everyone else to have a job.
My performance today in class was really fun for me. It went well, just as we practiced. Before the show, I was a little nervous but mostly excited. While my group and I were up on stage, I found myself smiling a lot. I was just having so much fun with everything that was happening, it was hard not to show it and to stay in character, something I personally need to work on. After our performance, the smile on my face got bigger as I listened to the audience applauding us. I was just so happy about how everything turned out. It was honestly very fun for me and I can't wait for our next show.

I'm glad you're happy with your performance, as you had a very strong showing personally and as a group. You did a great job of harnessing the energy from the crowd because you had great facial expressions that went with the story line. Apparently the big smile worked in your character's favor! The plot was good and had a nice build toward the end. My only hope would be to offer some resolution after the climatic finish to tie the end up nicely.

Creating my monologue wasn't easy. I had so many ideas going through my head, but then I was informed that I would be presenting alone and started panicking. Being on stage with others is fun for me, but the moment I'm alone, I become completely terrified. I was desperate to think of something that my audience found funny or sweet. I wanted it to be something that they would enjoy. I would come up with something but then instantly throw it out because I thought that it wasn't worth the time. Then I thought that maybe I should take a different approach. I decided that my monologue should be a sad/tragedy genre. This was so that the audience will stay more interested and will want to know what happens next.
In my monologue, my character is determined to keep her sister safe and alive. That's all she cares about. It's what drives her to continue through her troubles.
My monologue does not have the happiest of endings so I would place it in the tragedy genre.

When we attended "As You Like It" I was quite happy. I hadn't really seen a play before. When I was a baby, my mom would take my brother and I to "Shakespeare In The Park" all the time, apparently. I don't remember any of it so I consider this to be my first play and I loved it. I didn't understand most of it but I did enjoy the humor and the characters.
For my monologue performance, I'm still practicing staying in character. I'm really trying to 'become' my character and as we get closer and closer to the due date, I'm getting better.
So far, I'm not too sure how I'm going to bringing physicality to my character. I might wear something that an orphan would wear, maybe...probably. I'm not sure, I haven't exactly put a lot of thought into it.
Seeing "As You Like It" this week has really inspired me. I think that seeing other people do a LIVE performance has helped me ease my anxieties a bit. I know that when the day comes to perform I will still be a little nervous but I also know that I will be okay.

I performed my monologue on Thursday and honestly, I was nervous all the time beforehand. The moments leading up to the performance were nerve racking but being able to see other people's performances first made me feel a lot better. I was scared going up there but after a while of reading, I got more into it. I was still anxious but I wasn't terrified anymore. Afterwards, I felt really relieved and my heart was pounding. I did it though and I'm proud of myself. I thought that I was gonna be a nervous wreck up there but I was a lot more braver than I though that I could be.

Most of my ideas came from the tress and plants on my collage. I love the forest so when I was sketching out the set design, I imagined a forest/jungle feel. As I began to draw I wanted the set to connect to a story that was very abstract and colorful. At first, my choice was Alice in Wonderland but my drawing didn't seem dark enough. It took me a while but then I finally decided to have my set be for the Wizard of Oz. I added in much more after my decision such as flowers and bubbles. I also wanted to keep some of my own ideas in the story. Instead of a yellow brick road day and night, it turns into a river at nighttime. A magical river that the characters can walk on. Instead of emerald city, it's a large yellow city where the houses are big yellow triangles. Best of all, instead of 'Oz' it's a magical wizard cat with a butterfly mask. :)

This project was very fun for me. When I was making my collage, I noticed that I was cutting out a lot of trees and nature pictures from the magazine. I personally love animals and the forest so I wanted to incorporate that into my set somehow. After finishing the collage I was able to draw the abstract art for the set. The drawing part of the project was my favorite part because I love to draw. It's something that I would say that I'm good at. I also really like cats so I wanted to put a feline friend into my set. When it came to thinking about a story behind the design, I wanted to do a story that had to do with nature and animals. It took a while but finally I decided on the Wizard of Oz. I did add a twist to it to show creativity. The story takes place in the future where all the forests are magical and the characters were armor.
Actually making the model was fun for me too. I liked gathering all of materials and using the paints and fake plants/trees. One thing that did take a while was making the forest look more think and full of undergrowth and bushes. At the last few days, I was able get some fake moss and that helped with making the set look complete. When I finished, I was so proud with how it turned out. When I presented my project I wasn't to sure where to start with the story but I think that I did a good job.

I thought that creating my puppet was really fun. My favorite part was painting and hot gluing everything together. Something I struggled with was making my puppet's suit. It took a lot of planning ahead but I'm really happy with how it all turned out.

Preforming my puppet play with my group was really fun for me. I'm mostly proud of how great our backdrops turned out. My group and I tried worked very hard on this and in the end, we did it! Something good that happened was how fun it turned out. All of our puppets looked awesome and performing with them was so exciting. One thing that went wrong but was kinda funny was how my puppets hat kept falling off. I tried to hot glue it before the show but it still came off :). Something that I really enjoyed was watching other people's puppet play. Everyone was very creative with their shows and their puppets all looked amazing.

My performing experience was alright. I knew all my lines but as soon as I got up on stage I forgot them all because I was so nervous. However, the second time I was up, it was a lot easier. There was still some lines that I messed up on but I wasn't as nervous as the first time.

My final scene is going to be Reilly and I singing a song about how a girl went out on a date with another girl named Cecily Smith. At first, she's excited about going out with her but then she finds out about how they'll be spending time together and is a bit disappointed. Cecily, however, insists that she'll have fun because she's with her. She ends up loving their date and they end up getting married and having a son together. The song ends with the girl stating about how much she loves Cecily and how much she misses her, all the while singing Cecily's then famous quote: "Who cares what you are listening to, it's who you're listening with"
The scene will be played out in three different parts, each representing a different time that the girl and Cecily are together. Cecily's costume is a puffy, blue-green dress with spots.
The girls costume will be a black dress with red spots.
The name of the girl singing(recalling) the story/song is unknown.

My final performance was fun. I really loved working with Reilly too. I don't like singing in front of people but to do it with a friend made me feel a lot better. I feel like something I could have worked on would be my dancing. I messed up a little bit but now I know that that is something that I work on in the future. Something that I'll remember from our finals is probably all the other performances that I was in such as Romeo and Juliet and Spider-man.
