My names Mackenzie, and I am a Freshman at River City High School! With this class, I hope to gain more insight on how to better myself with one of my favorite arts, Theater! I've originally gained interest with this class from 8th grade, when I was taking a Drama class. In the Fall of 2019, I joined my first ever play, "Midsummer Nights Dream" here at River City! I'm glad I am able to continue my studies on Theater with this class, and within the future, I plan on partaking within more theatrical activities! Have a good day to all that stumble across here!

1. Who is more important... the playwright or the cast and crew? Defend your assertion by explaining your logic and providing some examples.
Well, within a play, neither of these can go without each other. For starters, you can't have a play if it doesn't have any backbone. If there is no story to follow, then what will the actors and crew work towards? Same goes for the story. If there is a story, and yet no actors and crew, then there's no possible way to making this story a sort of reality. Of course, there are things called books, in which they're just a story and that's all. Though to a play, without actors, then it won't BE A PLAY EITHER! They both hold an incredibly important stance within theater, and not one goes above the other because of how important they are.

2. Also, how did your first in-class performance go? What did it feel like before, during, and after performing your animal pantomime?
Before, when deciding what to preform, it was just a ton of brainstorming. Honestly, I don't think I could've done this without everyone's help, and it was so much fun just hearing ideas being pitched and just interacting with everyone for the past week. I'm glad everyone was willing to work on this little performance! Effort goes a long way, and this was a fairly well performance despite how it was a bit messy(just starting out here, of course). In the end, I'm proud of everyone and I hope to be working more with these people in the future!

1. Give a synopsis of your monologue and the character you portrayed.

A mother has a talk with her son about a call she gets from the school about how he beat up a kid. I am portraying the Mother, Melissa, as she goes through the troubles of facing her son in a very troubling situation.

2. What specific part of the preparation (worksheets, acting exercises, scoring,, etc.) most helped you to prepare for the performance?

I mostly needed to get a little deeper understanding of the character, so writing out information about the character helped. Also getting to know the meaning behind each of her words helped too. Though memorizing and rehearsing it over and over was a big part of it.

3. To what extent did you feel you were "in character" when performing your monologue?

I felt like whatever the character was going through, that the very same anxiousness from the scene affected me just as much. I spent a while trying to understand and convince myself that Melissa was something else I was going through.

4. What's your biggest take-away from this project & performance?

My biggest takeaway from this is mainly how I could work more on my body language. I feel like I could've been more expressive with what I did visually. Though this is the first time I've put focus into body language. I also haven't really tried an emotional piece, and I've been wanting to do so for quite some time!
