The Diviners

This marvelously theatrical play is the story of a disturbed young man and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher in southern Indiana in the early 1930s. When the boy was young he almost drowned. This trauma, and the loss of his mother in the same accident, has left him deathly afraid of water. The preacher, set on breaking away from a long line of Kentucky family preachers, is determined not to do what he does best. He works as a mechanic for the boy’s father. The town doesn’t have a preacher and the women try to persuade him to preach while he tries to persuade the child to wash. When the preacher finally gets the boy in the river and is washing him, the townspeople mistake the scene for a baptism. They descend on the event and, in the confusion, the boy drowns.
Content Advisory: The Diviners contains themes of grief, trauma, faith, isolation, and loss. The production includes references to alcoholism, mild profanity, and depictions related to drowning that may be emotionally intense for some audience members. While there is no graphic violence or sexual content, the play's conclusion deals with death and sacrifice.

Norah, Una and Iseult set sail from Ireland to escape the ravages of hunger, only to find a new set of dangers on their ocean voyage. The so-called “coffin ships” are full of illness, squalor and grief, and the passengers can rely only on one another for comfort. When a cruel, angry sailor refuses to show them mercy, it seems like even the women’s stories might be lost. But they don’t know that the sea that swirls around the ship is listening. The sea remembers everything. And the sea demands justice. A poetic and striking historical drama with a hypnotic ocean chorus.
Content Advisory: We Are the Sea explores the experiences of families fleeing the Irish Great Famine. The production includes themes of starvation, death, grief, forced migration, peril at sea, and historical trauma. While there are no graphic depictions of violence or abuse, some audience members may find the emotional subject matter intense.

At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt.
