CJ3: Play Writing

Draft a script that brings classic characters to life through dialogue.

Requirements:
  1. Pen a draft of an 8 line play script
  2. The first four lines are a brief back-and-forth to create a tight intro to the dialogue.
  3. The fifth and sixth lines are longer, each containing five or six sentences, so the characters can work on  expressing their thought process.
  4. The last two lines are brief and conclusive in relation to the problem at hand.
  5. Do this a number of times with different characters and scenarios to practice.
EXAMPLE:
A Hey.
B Hey.
A Have you seen my watch?
B Don’t think so.
A And I think you have. A while back I left maybe ten dollars of change out, which vaporized. Also, my mom sent Valentine chocolates. Gone. I may be absent-minded, but I’m not crazy. I want the watch.
B What’s been going on? I don’t like to say it, but the paranoia level is sky high. We’ve known each other since fifth grade, okay? Plus you might have noticed I’m wearing a watch. Why would I want yours?
A Give me the watch or get out.
B (exiting) You need some help.

CJ2: Creative Writing

Use art as inspiration for creative thinking:
  1. First take time to notice, wonder, discover, and interpret
  2. Based on your interpretation of the piece, begin writing based on inspiration from the art piece. Consider these options:
    1. Write down the possible meaning of the image and persuade your reader to believe that your story is the correct one based on details in the image.
    2. Identify characters and their motives. Who are they and what do they want? Explain how you know based on details.
    3. Pretend that you are in the image, and describe what you see, smell, feel, and hear.
    4. Describe the details that are just outside of the image, the ones we can’t see.
    5. Introduce dialogue into your story. What are they saying?
    6. Sequence the events of the story. What happened five minutes before this scene, what is happening now, and what happens five minutes later? How do you know?
    7. Write from the perspective of one of the characters in the image.
    8. Explain who is the protagonist and antagonist. What is their conflict?
